ECITB Firewatcher

ECITB Firewatcher Course is a one-day course introducing the fundamental principles of the fire watcher role on an engineering construction site.

What is the ECITB Firewatcher Course?

Course Structure

The training includes how to follow a safe system of work, observe and monitor for the risk of fire especially in hot work areas and what to do if a fire is discovered including raising the alarm, evacuating others safely and discharging a fire extinguisher. 

  • Define relevant factors associated with the role of a fire watcher and methods of minimising risks
  • Define the procedures tasks and actions to be taken in the event of a fire on site
  • Preparation for fire watching activities
  • Use safe firefighting techniques

Entry Requirements

  • None

Assessments

  • A question paper with at least 20 multiple-choice or short answer questions covering all the learning outcomes with a minimum of 1 question per each enabling objective. Learners must achieve a minimum pass mark of 80% in the test to be awarded a certificate. 

Practical Exercise 

  • The learner is required to carry out a simulated emergency response to a fire watching scenario to include the following points:

    • Complete relevant documentation – sign on to a permit to work, complete point of work risk assessment
    • The learner is to select the correct fire extinguisher for the task and carry out a visual inspection
    • The learner is to control the scene, ensuring any other ‘workers’ are directed to a safe place
    • The learner is to raise the alarm (operate break glass or shout Fire, Fire!!) and discharge the extinguisher as per manufacturer’s instructions

Certificates

  • Successful delegates will receive a certificate that is valid for 3 years and will need to be renewed before expiry.
